FYI - We still have some Covert Companions, Practice Locks, Quad Comb Sets, Hinge Pin Tools, Lockbox Tools, and several other items left in stock on covertinstruments.com after the restock yesterday. We don’t expect them to last the day, so act quickly if you were looking for one of these items.
Was wondering why o hadn't seen any videos in my feed for a week or 2, turns out i had bern in subscribed..... Of course, ILclass wouldn't do anything like that, honest 😉
This one is a little misleading. The key and lock are not there to secure anything of value, rather to prevent accidental energising of equipment or machinery while it is under maintenance.
I think you maybe should think of that "key" more as a loose handle. The safety is in the 4 soldiers with machineguns that are keeping an eye on you. :-) I think it so you do not have an easily accessible turnknop you may risk hitting with your elbow but have to use a tool to turn. :-)
Just in case people aren't aware, these locks have nothing to do with security. The are designed to be operated by coded keys that remain captive. The only have to resist being opened with the wrong key or basic tools (screwdriver etc). This is a safety device.
We have exactly the same lock at work, for the motor of a spinning apparat to work it has to be inserted near the control unit. To open the compartment with the rotating parts i have to use the this key as well. It is not there to be picking proof but as a safety and insurance tool.
TL;DR summary of comments. the key and lock in video is not designed for nor intended to be for security. They are physical enforcement of a logic conditions in a control system. Often used for safety but also not primary purpose.
These are used for Electrical panels where there is a chance of a panel staying live if you had one standard key for all panels. They are not really a security key in the real sense.
Same category as lockout tagout locks. You can break those with your hands. But visually seeing a flouresent lock keeping s machine off is a mental signal its off for a reason don't touch. But if sombody looses a key you can remove it in about 2 seconds
Since it is meant to switch an electric current, there would be a mechanical switch. Would it still be possible to turn the knob with the picking tool? Wouldn't it be easier to just unscrew the lock and turn it?
It is made to be durable and easy to insert the key quickly, not hard to pick. In the event of an emergency shut down you don't want to snap a key off. This would be in the event of a shut down in which emergency cutoffs were not necessary because they can cause dmg or trigger alerts and inspections. This would also be more durable for day to day use and result in a long life, as well as recognizability.
Fortunately, this lock is only there to slow down the well-meaning, but misguided employees from energizing the machinery while the maintenance guys are working on it. We had a LOTO program where I worked, there was nothing special about the locks the company issued... except for the pretty red paint.
We have 2 of these on a robotic machine at work, It is a safety for the operator to remove and enter the robotic machining center with out danger of the robot … well killing me.
To be fair - It's an interlock, it's not designed for security in the slightest. It exists so you personally (or your 90lb Filipino buddy) don't turn the switch and kill yourself. If anyone is trying to pick it, it's because they are either literally trying to murder you, or because it's stuck/broken and something important can no longer run.
All I feel that needs to be said is that your concise and complete debunking of modern over-claimed locks of all sorts are toys in your hands. And as you would be the first to admit, many other people are able to learn from you how to overcome these silly little mechanisms. But the main thrust of your videos is entertainment and I find your output totally satisfying, especially April 1st material. Thanks.
30 seconds into the Video and i am still trying to Guess? Which one is the lock and which one is the Key?? .. And baam, The Key is bigger than the Lock . . Yikes
That’s exactly it. It’s not meant for “security” as much as it’s just a safety device. This “lock” is designed to have an easily-replaceable key, in the off-chance the repair technician loses it while he’s performing repairs, and can’t reactivate the machine without the key. If you put a classic lock in its place, you’re talking a few thousand dollars at best to replace something that really doesn’t need the security in the first place.
It must be so nice to be able a minute long video without having to lose your viewers attention, great video. love the that you focus on quality and not quantity. Keep it up!
As we all know, there is no safer security lock for ANY nuclear weapon than our prime minister, president or other head of state. It's all good folks 😊
To be fair, this lock isn't necessarily meant to be secure in the traditional sense. It's meant to be easily identifiable and it's designed in a way that its operator has to be very intentional when using it.
